Upcoming Safety Test Review Sessions

Passing a CRF safety test demonstrates that you have the proficiency and leadership to be responsible for the safety of others, which in turn can qualify you for additional activities at the boathouse and on the river [e.g. being able to help (row) with Adaptive rowing, row as independent "buddy" boats, coach others, earn a key to the boathouse, etc...] !

Safety tests aren't a walk in the park, but with a little studying anybody can become safety certified.

We are ready to help you along the right path with two study sessions to properly prepare you for taking the test(s).

Sessions will be approximately 1.5 hours and take place in the Cleveland Rowing Foundation boathouse conference room on:

Sunday, July 16 at 2:00 p.m.
and
Thursday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Please take some time to read over the Safety Manual before coming to the sessions. We strongly encourage you to come to both sessions but it's not mandatory.

If you plan on attending, please print a copy of the SaM (http://www.clevelandrows.org/…/uploads/2015/01/SaM-FINAL.pdf) and bring it with you AND register in advance by sending an email to info@westernreserverowing.com.

Note: Space is limited to 12 people per session.

Dominic Santora Selected As United States U23 National Team Coxswain

DomToss.jpgCongratulations to Dominic Santora on his selection as the coxswain for the United States U23 national team. After almost a month of grueling practices and competition, Dominic emerged as the team's top choice for the 9th seat. Next week, Dominic and his eight teammates will represent the United States in Plovdiv, Bulgaria at the 2017 World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 19-22.

Dom coxed for many WRRA programs -- Learn to Row, Summer Rowing League, Intermediate, and Masters -- as a student at Saint Ignatius High School (’14) and during the summers while at Syracuse University (’18). In 2016, he saw the Masters Men’s 8+ to gold at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in Ontario, Canada. In June, he was at the helm for Syracuse's 8th place finish at the 2017 IRA (Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Championship Regatta.

A truly great coxswain inspires our best rowing, and WRRA invites you to acknowledge this tremendous accomplishment by one of our own. The U23 team must raise $50,000 to compete on the international stage. Please consider supporting Dominic by clicking HERE to make a tax-deductible donation on the U23 team's RallyMe page.

Summer Rowing League Regatta #1 Results

WRRA's Summer Rowing League Regatta #1 took place on Saturday, June 24. With great weather and only one freighter interruption at the tail end of the day, it was a good dress rehearsal for the rest of the SRL season.

If you are looking to see how it all played out, you can check out the final results here: http://westernreserverowing.com/programs/summer-rowing-leagues/srl-regatta/

Congratulations to all participants and thank you to all of the volunteers and supporters who made the day possible. See you all at regatta #2 (aka the SRL Championship Regatta) on Saturday, August 12!

CRF Maintenance Day and Grounds Clean-up

On Saturday, June 10, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. WRRA will be participating in a CRF Maintenance Day and Grounds Clean-up.

Volunteers are needed. With several areas to clean up, you can choose the one that best suits your interest(s), from raking and picking up debris in our next door lot, to cleaning out the CRF storage locker, pulling weeds and clearing the parking lot of nails/metal junk. Food, snacks and juice will be provided.

Please contact volunteer@westernreserverowing.com

WRRA Coxing 101 Clinic

WRRA will be hosting a Coxing 101 Clinic on Saturday, June 10th - 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

Ever find yourself unexpectedly in the coxswain seat? This clinic will help you learn the basics and give helpful tidbits to increase your confidence in the 9th seat. This hour-long, off-water clinic will cover topics such as:

  • Responsibilities of a coxswain
  • Basic commands and steering
  • Moving the boat to/from the rack
  • Overview of the cox box and how to use it

If you are a rower who is interested in coxing, a buddy boat who rotates coxswains, or just want to know what that little person is doing up there, this clinic is for you!

Please RSVP to coaching@westernreserverowing.com

We Row In The Rain

If you didn't know already, we row in the rain.

Practices will continue in the event of rain and teams/coxes/coaches are expected to show up. If there are severe storms in the area, teams will be notified by email if practice has been cancelled. It will be up to your team to schedule a make-up practice.

The following CRF rules apply if there are storms in the area:

  • Crews are not permitted to go on the water when lightning or thunder is present.
  • Crews must wait 30 minutes after the last audible thunder or visible thunder before launching.

Shells caught out on the river in a thunderstorm should seek shelter from the lightning under a bridge until the storm has passed if unable to make it back to the dock and off the water.

On the upside, rowing in the rain does make the water flatter ...

Registration Process:
After arriving at the registration site through the link on the program pages, add the activity to your "cart". At that point you will be prompted to login (or create an account if you do not already have one). The advertised fee will include any pre-requisite components which will be automatically added to your "shopping cart". For example, for Summer Rowing League it will include WRRA Full Voting Membership fee and a WRRA Summer Facilities Assessment. Once you are on the "Shopping Cart" page, if you wish to enroll for another activity, simply click on "activities" on the bar across the top and choose something else. Registration is not complete until you get to the page that contains the option to print your receipt. Please review the email confirmation you receive immediately and contact the membership director if there is any issue.

Private Scullers: If you intend to register for both Private Sculling and another WRRA rowing program, please complete registration for one (checkout) before doing the other so that membership fees can be calculated correctly. Otherwise, you will be over-charged. All Private Scullers must register for Private Sculling.

Can't remember your password? If you cannot remember your password, please use the button "Forget your password?" to reset it. If you still cannot access your account please contact membership@westernreserverowing.com for assistance. DO NOT CREATE ANOTHER ACCOUNT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE. We will remove it.

Payment:
Payment is by credit card. Some programs will have the option of a payment plan. If this option is available it will be automatically presented as the default in a pop-up window. If you wish to pay in full, click the "x" at the top right of the Pop-up and select "pay in full" and proceed. Otherwise, click on "agree to payment plan' at the bottom of the pop-up window and proceed. If you need assistance, look HERE. All payment plans will have a "payment plan surcharge" to cover the fees associated with the automatic payments. Note: the payment plan option is not available on mobile devices. All fees are subject to sales tax (8%) except for Learn to Row. There will be a $1.25 transaction fee added to each transaction. Other service-provider processing fees (3.58%) are included in the price of the program. An explanation of WRRA fees can be found in the following document: Explanation of WRRA Fees

Waivers and Policies:
Registrants will also be prompted to electronically sign waivers which attest to their ability to swim, provide release of liability, and agree to the WRRA membership, payment, and refund terms. We will also require signing of paper version of these documents at your first practice. The text of these waivers can be accessed on the checkout page and can also be read here:

SafeSport:
USRowing has joined the United States Olympic Committee in its SafeSport campaign aimed at raising awareness, stopping child abuse in sport and creating a safe culture in sports programs across the country. As a member of USRowing, WRRA has adopted a SafeSport policy designed to promote an environment free from bullying, hazing, and all forms of harassment. While WRRA is primarily an adult organization, we have a limited number of youth involved in our programs, and we share our boathouse with several scholastic rowing organizations. We share the commitment to creating a safe environment for the entire boathouse community.

Please take a moment to review the SafeSport policy available on the Safety page of WRRA's website.
