RiverSweep - Saturday, May 10, 2014

RiverSweep 2014 -- celebrating 25 years of beautifying the Cuyahoga River Valley -- is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. - Noon.

You are invited to join with your fellow WRRA rowers and friends of WRRA at Sainato's on Columbus Road, where we'll coordinate and then branch out to spend the morning removing trash from the areas bordering the Cuyahoga River on the Columbus Road Peninsula that is home to our boathouse.

This event of the Canalway Partners targets the areas along the Cuyahoga, the Ohio and Erie Canalway and the Towpath Trail. Nearly 1000 volunteers have participated in this effort in years past, collecting 10-12 tons of trash each year.

After the cleanup a celebratory free luncheon will be held from Noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Cleveland Rowing Foundation boathouse.

But wait, that's not all! The first 1,000 volunteers also get an awesome T-shirt designed by George Coghill starring the well-known RiverSweep frog.

Let us know you plan to come so we can obtain the proper number of t-shirts and supplies (gloves and garbage bags). E-mail us at volunteer@westernreserverowing.com

This is a fun, feel-good, make-a-difference charity activity of WRRA. Join us!

New Morning Summer Rowing League Session Offered

In addition to the ten sessions per week currently offered, WRRA is pleased to announce a new time slot for Summer Rowing League. Contingent upon interest, for the first time ever, there will be a weekday morning option for SRL. The new slot will be on Tuesday mornings from 6:00 a.m. - 7:30 a.m., beginning on Tuesday, May 13 as a "regular time" for the entire SRL program duration.

Any individuals or teams that may wish to consider rowing on Tuesday morning, please email WRRA Club Manager Jaz by the end of the day Friday, April 25 at SRL@westernreserverowing.com. If there is sufficient interest, we will enable registration.

Want to start the day in a spectacular way? There is absolutely nothing that compares with watching the sun come up from a racing shell on the Cuyahoga River! Hope to see you on Tuesday mornings.

Welcome Our New Club Manager

On behalf of the WRRA Board of Directors, I would like to officially welcome Jasmine Carlsen to WRRA as our new Club Manager. Jaz will be with us full time from March 1 through November 1, and will assist with all facets of WRRA programming and management. She will organize and provide daily on-the-dock management for our Summer and Fall Rowing Leagues, while assisting all WRRA rowing programs. Jaz is a rower, a member of SRL, and both of her sons have rowed through high school and at Miami University.

Please welcome her when you see her at the boathouse.

WILL YOU HELP OUT WITH SUMMER ROWING LEAGUE?

With the rowing season finally upon us, WRRA is asking for a few good folks to help organize our Summer Rowing League on an SRL Committee. Jaz will take the lead, but we need a few more to help things run smoothly, from things like T-Shirt ordering and delivery, to making sure our two SRL Regattas run smoothly. If you will be on our SRL Committee, or have a question or comment, please be in touch with Jaz, or with me directly.

Best regards,
Jeffrey Zabor

Registration Is Now Open

Western Reserve Rowing Association is pleased to announce that registration for 2014 rowing activities is now open!

Spring is here, the snow is melted (hopefully for good), thoughts of rowing are taking hold, and conveniently, registration for 2014 rowing activities is now open! Program descriptions for all WRRA Rowing Programs can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate link below -- each of these pages will serve as the portal to the Registration site via "blue" Registration buttons found on each page:

After arriving at the registration site through the link on the program pages, add the activity to your "cart". At that point you will be prompted to login (or create an account if you do not already have one). The advertised fee will include any pre-requisite components which will be automatically added to your "shopping cart". For example, for Summer Rowing League it will include WRRA Full Voting Membership fee and a WRRA Summer Facilities Assessment. Once you are on the "Shopping Cart" page, if you wish to enroll for another activity, simply click on "activities" on the bar across the top and choose something else (for example LTR or SRL).

Private Scullers: If you intend to register for both Private Sculling and another WRRA rowing program, please complete registration for one before doing the other so that membership fees can be calculated correctly. Otherwise, you will be over-charged. All Private Scullers must register for Private Sculling.

DO NOT CREATE ANOTHER ACCOUNT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE. We will delete it. If you cannot remember your password, please use the button "Forget your password?" to reset it. There is a known issue that a few experience when resetting the password that places them in an endless loop without providing access to the account. If you experience this, please contact membership@westernreserverowing.com for assistance.

Contact info:

  • If you have any difficulties registering, please contact membership@westernreserverowing.com.
  • If you have questions about Summer Rowing League which are not addressed on the web pages for those programs, please contact SRL@westernreserverowing.com.
  • If you have questions about other programs, please see the contact links on the appropriate program description pages on the WRRA website.

Coaches Wanted

WRRA is looking for coaches for its Learn-to-Row, Summer Rowing League, Rec and Sculling programs. This year we are also looking for someone who may be able to help out as an assistant coach with the Masters team a couple of days a week. If you've coached in the past, we'd love to have you back. If you know someone that you think would be a good coach (rower, student, coach with another program, etc), we'd gladly take referrals. We're looking for coaches for both SRL and Rec programs which begin in mid-May, as well as those who can help out with the Learn To Row sessions during the month of April. Come help a team improve, earn a little cash, and have some fun on the river this summer!

Complete details, including job descriptions and 2014 pay schedule can be found in the Members section here: http://westernreserverowing.com/members1/employment/.

If interested, please fill out the application and return to coaching@westernreserverowing.com. Any questions can be directed to that same e-mail address as well.

Experienced rower: at least 1 full year (summer and fall) or any two seasons

Please indicate the activity(s) and dates for which you wish to volunteer. If you are a rower and only row one side, please indicate the side. Flexibility is encouraged as it will facilitate filling available slots.

Since more people may volunteer for a given slot than there are positions available, we will confirm your assignment as the volunteer positions for each date are filled.

Thank you for making our Learn to Row program a success!
